Train Types

Traveling by train is the best and ideal traveling transportation especially for long distance destination.  Aside from it sustains great contemporary amenities; the best about traveling by train is because it is less expensive compared to traveling by airplanes, buses and among other related things.

Unlike traveling by plane, where most of the passengers were complaining of the jet lag they experienced; traveling by train never let their passengers experience the same feelings.  And the guests will surely enjoy their travel journeying with trains since they were allowed to wander even if the train is in motion.  For further information, there are different types of trains; and below are included in the lists.

  • Long-distance trains: This type of trains usually has a dining car or a restaurant for the guests to accommodate their meals.  It travels mostly in major cities in different destinations.  Rarely, it journeys other countries aside from the cities as well as some region of the country.  Most of the of the Long-distance trains shows off sleeping cars for it mostly takes an overnight travel for a long distance destination, and it only runs in a moderate-speed. The Long-distance train can be seen in Siberia and other progressive countries.

  • Passenger trains: Its journey time varies in linking minutes and days.  The Passengers trains as well travel in between stations.  And the distance which is in between stations diverge from less than 1 km to more than 1000 km.  It is an expected train which built for passengers.  Trains that cater passengers and dropping them by in their proper destinations are considered as Passenger trains.  These types of trains were available in many countries that operate traveling trains.

  • The Branch Line trains: This type of train has the connections to local lines or local stations and mostly to the stopping services area.  The Branch Line trains as well operate to all the stations available in the city or through to the greater part of the stations on a line. 

  • Inter-city trains: The Inter-city trains do not usually stop at the small stations and rather mostly stop and serves in all train stations.  It obviously connects to major cities of the country; and has been recognized as “stoppers” or local trains.  A train which is serving the city of London, Germany and among others is considered as the Inter-city trains.  This is best for travelers which journey is within the city. 

  • Commuter trains: it operates mostly in the cities as well as its periphery, it is ideal preference for travelers which has a short distance destinations.  Other Commuter trains feature standing position rather than seating.  This would mostly happen due to the reason that they mostly give way to accommodate wheelchairs, prams and cycles.  On the other countries, they built double-decked type of trains for the purposes of metropolitan areas.  This kind of trains; the double-decked passenger trains as well as the high speed and sleeper trains is commonly found in Europe. 

  • Double-decked passenger trains: It shows off two levels of floor; mostly there is only one deck in the entrance area.  While some other double-decker trains have its entrance doors particularly on the lower level which has no steps are required in order to step on the lower part of deck.  It is a unique design of train compared to other type of trains; it is best suited for every traveler since it can accommodate a number of them towards their destinations; which is commonly seen in London. 

  • High Speed Train: This is an ideal train to travel as its usual speed is of 145 km/h pasengers arrive to their destinations in no time!  It is commonly found in the European countries.  This is also one of the best train to ride with since it will show you to the many panoramic types of scenery in Europe, to alluring landscapes, mountains and among others.  The Day train types is composed of  the High-speed trains, Thalys, Eurostar, TGV, Thalys, ICE, Eurostar Italia, Local Trains, InterRegio, Talgo, Traditional trains, InterCity; EuroCity and Corail, AVE, and Cisalpino. 

  • Night trains: An ideal train travel for a long distance destination.  Most of the train travel takes an hour before it stops to the passenger’s destinations.  Night trains as well commonly operate in the European countries.  Most of the Night traveling trains provide accommodations where guests can tire themselves while the train is still in motion, as well as dining area where they can take their meals.  The Night trains are arranged with the Elipsos trains, D-Nacht, EuroNight, CityNightLine, and NachtZug. 

  • Local trains: Most of the Local trains were operated at the most rustic areas where found captivating sceneries.  These remote areas are assigned also by small local trains; the best train to travel with because it will lead you to some local culture where your Local trains passes.  This type of train is designated in the countries of Germany, Italy and to the country of Switzerland. 

  • Traditional trains: The Traditional trains were mostly renovated.  It is being shaped of an engine dragging a set of coaches, or a multiple-unit.  Despite the fact that it is not that sensational type of train unlike the High-Speed train, it is then more fortunate in terms of the high levels of rail investment. 


  • Hotel trains: this type of train is recognized as hotel train for the reason that it shows off hotel like ambiance.  There are accommodations available inside where the guests can accommodate themselves while waiting for their proper destination to stop.  It mostly operated to a long distance destinations, it is also best for travelers who has different excursions of destinations where there is no need for them to drop for a certain place to check-in in such a hotel; because the Hotel trains has the ability to welcome their passengers to their prestigious rooms.  One of the example of the Hotel train is the Elipsos Trenhotel; Elipsos serves mostly in the places of Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Paris, and then to the famous France.
